Workshop: Spoon Carving (Level 2) Workshop
Date: Sunday, 6th July 2025
Time: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
Location: Lower Sharpham Barton Farm, Ashprington, TQ9 7DX
Experience Level: Suitable for beginners and intermediate carvers
Includes: Tools, materials, tea, coffee, and biscuits

Join us for a day of transforming logs into beautiful spoons! Whether you want to refine your skills or break free from old habits, this workshop is designed to enhance your carving abilities and deepen your appreciation for the craft.

We'll start with green wood, learning to safely split logs before using axes, knives, and hook tools to create stunning cooking and eating spoons. Alex will guide you through essential techniques, including:

Selecting the Best Woods for Spooncarving 
Splitting Wood with Axes & Froes 
Efficient axe work and body posture
Safe and effective hook knife carving
Knife grips and carving techniques

With a structured approach, you'll create beautiful spoons and gain insights to apply to future projects.

Timings:
09:30 - Arrival & Intros (tea & coffee followed by a walk to the carving area)
10:00 - Splitting & Axe Carving (learn body posture and create a perfect spoon blank)
12:30 - Lunch Break
1:15 - Hook Knife Carving (master the spoon bowl)
2:30 - Tea Break
2:45 - Knife Carving (explore knife control and finishing cuts)
4:30 - Return to Tea Barn (shop & goody bags)

Experience Required
No prior experience is necessary, though attending a Level 1 workshop or having basic carving practice is recommended. This workshop is also suitable for experienced carvers looking to refine their technique.

If you need adjustments for mobility or other needs, please reach out. The carving site is a five-minute walk from the parking area.

Venue:
Located at Lower Sharpham Barn on the River Dart, the venue is part of a rewilding project with stunning views. Use what3words: coffee.hindering.facts to navigate. Please allow extra time for the bumpy track!

Safety & Wellbeing 
Alex is trained in Outdoor & Paediatric First Aid and has extensive teaching experience. Each workshop is risk-assessed for safety. We’ll ideally carve outside, so please bring warm clothing and sturdy footwear. All carving areas are within a two-minute walk from the car park, and restrooms are available along with refreshments in the tea barn.

Accessibility & Inclusivity 
Alex’s workshops foster a supportive environment, allowing everyone to learn at their own pace. Carving can be a meditative experience, and many find it calming. You’ll leave with the skills and confidence to continue carving at home.
