Recently, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Emmet Van Driesche for Spoonesaurus magazine to discuss my journey into spoon carving, teaching, and what I've learned about selling wooden spoons in person.
For those who aren’t familiar with Spoonesaurus, it’s a fantastic magazine dedicated to all things spoon carving, with insights from carvers around the world. If you’re passionate about spoon carving or woodcraft, this is definitely a publication to check out! Published quarterly, the magazine comes out in January, April, July and October and is also available in a compendium of 10 issues at a time. A veritable treasure chest of spooncarving inspiration!
In the interview, I reflected on how I started carving and becoming engaged in the world of craft as a means for facilitating mental health and addiction recovery. We talked about the challenges of earning a living from craft, the benefits spooncarving has on mental health, and my passion for woodcraft for wellbeing: providing spoon carving as a social prescribing initiative.
The main focus of the article is about my somewhat steep learning curve of selling hand-carved wares in person from local craft markets to at high end craft festivals such as Craft Festival Bovey Tracey
If you’re interested in spoon carving or just want to dive deeper into the craft, I highly recommend subscribing to Spoonesaurus magazine. It’s full of insights from carvers around the world and is a wonderful treat to receive through the post!
